A good question, over time the definition of this still popular piece of bedroom furniture has shifted slightly.
Traditionally a tallboy was constructed in a stacked style of design where the top half is slightly narrower than the bottom half. This is because they were constructed as two separate, heavy wooden pieces of bedroom furniture that lock together, making them easier to move.
Today however, the term and also the design have shifted with the times and whilst it is still indicative of the unit being a tall chest of drawers, it is now more commonly used to describe a tall and narrow chest of drawers for the bedroom.
These modern tallboys are popular as they are a good way of adding storage when space is limited, and you don’t want the bulk of an additional full size chest of drawers
You will find that typically a modern tallboy unit will be between 5 and 7 drawers high – so truly is a tall chest of drawers when you consider a standard one would be normally only 3 or 4 drawers high.
However, to enable them to fit in tight gaps, and make them more versatile their width is typically around 40 – 45cm, meaning that they take up in the region of half the floorspace a traditional sized drawer unit would do – something that can be a godsend if space is tight, with the additional height at least in part compensating for the narrower width.
