Space is everything

With the bedroom more than any other room in our experience available space is the major deciding factor in what to buy.  We always advocate that you understand this properly before committing to buy your bedroom furniture. The best way of working out what space you have is to apply masking tape to the floor where you want to put your new chest of drawers unit to understand the impact it will have. 

When measuring don’t forget to consider the impact of the skirting board, this will normally have 2-3cm difference in measurements versus measuring against the wall.  You can get away with this normally if you go for a chest of drawers that has legs, but be sure to check

Make sure you also allow at least 60cm in front of the unit so you can open the drawers fully.  Ideally if you can you want to be allowing nearer 80cm is space allows.

Choosing the right chest of drawers

Once you have worked out what available space you have you then need to consider what type of unit you want

For those that are short on spare floor space a tallboy chest of drawers is a great choice.  These units are much narrower than standard chest of drawers, often measuring around half the width.  The benefit a tallboy will bring you is height.  Typically these units are taller than a normal chest of drawers to recoup space lost from the width, meaning you can easily get units that are 7 drawers high instead of the standard four.  This extra height means you maximise drawer space without giving up floor space

Want the storage space and a dressing table too?  If you are struggling to make both fit, a popular choice these days is to go for a double width chest of drawers.  These large wide drawer units take up less floor space than having two separate items of bedroom furniture next to each other, give you maximum storage space, but also give a nice large top to act as a pseudo dressing table.  They are also great if you want to have a TV or similar in the bedroom and don’t want the hassle of having to wall mount it

Colour is important

Choosing the right colour for the room is the other important factor.  And like everything else, part of the decision on what colour is best will come down to space. 

Whilst you may have your own design ideas, it is important to take space into consideration.  If you have plenty of space, you will have more freedom to choose the colours you want.  If the space is going to be a bit cramped then you should aim to go for white and other lighter colours – whilst these won’t magically make you more space, our experience tells us they will help the room feel lighter overall and a bit less cramped than a dark wood finish or black bedroom furniture would.

Once last tip!  Avoid any chest of drawers that comes with plastic runners. These are cheap and do not last unfortunately.  Metal runners, or carved wood runners will both stand the test of time a lot better and are well worth the small extra investment they may cost
