Whilst you may look at a dresser and think “ah yes that’s a nice chest of drawers” and fundamentally it is, understanding what a dresser is will help you narrow down your search if that is the piece of bedroom furniture you are actually looking for.
There are a number of key factors which make up what a dresser is, in the same way there are for a Tallboy which is also part of the overall bedroom chest of drawers range
Overall Shape
A dresser is a much wider piece of furniture than a standard chest of drawers
With a short wide footprint the dresser will also be not as tall as a typical chest of drawers. This comes from the overall layout of it which will normally see 2 or three columns of drawers stacked next to each other, giving a total of 6 or 9 drawers in it’s most common combinations. Where as a standard chest of drawers will be a single column of drawers that has 4 or 5 layers of drawer in it
This means that whilst a typical chest of drawers will often be 120-150 cm tall a dresser is more likely to be around 75-90 cm tall and come in at roughly waist height
Does a dresser have a different use to a chest of drawers?
Fundamentally no, they are both bedroom drawer units that can easily store a lot of clothes out of sight for you to keep the bedroom tidy that you don’t necessarily want to go to the effort of hanging in a wardrobe. However, when you consider their ancillary uses there are differences driven by their shape.
Given the wider design of a dresser, it has a large flat top that can serve many more purposes in the bedroom. For those that don’t have the space for a dressing table or separate vanity table, the top of a dresser unit will often double up as one of these in many homes. The large top is also a great home for mirrors, TVs and other large items that you couldn’t necessarily fit on top of a standard chest of drawers.
Hopefully this helps clear up what the difference between the two items is. Here at Price Crash Furniture we have hundreds of items to chose from across a wider design of chest of drawers, including many dressers as well as more standard drawer units and tallboys for those that don’t have the floorspace in the bedroom to accommodate what can be quite a large item of furniture.
