What are the options for storage?
Given that they are a core item of furniture, it will be no surprise that you can get many different designs of coffee table to suit almost every imaginable need.
If you have a busy home with lots going on, or are just short on space, then you should seriously think about getting a coffee table that has built in storage if you are in the market for the new centrepiece table for your living room
Storage options are diverse in their execution, but ultimately boil down to three core options;
· Drawers – this is a great choice for smaller items that you want to store out of the way. A coffee table with drawers is great if you want to try and maintain clear surfaces in your room, and want to hide lots of small items out the way such as remote controllers, gaming controllers and power banks.
· Built in shelves – a coffee table with shelf will provide you with more practical storage, however in the process it compromises aesthetics somewhat given that things are not actually stored out of site and the shelf can be viewed. The main benefit of a coffee table with a shelf vs coffee table with drawers is that you can more easily store larger items such as board games that could otherwise be a challenge to squeeze in and out of a drawer.
· Lift up top – a coffee table with lift up top is ideal for anyone who is planning to use their coffee table to eat at or do occasional work on. The benefit of the lift up section of the top is that is can be positioned to bring it up and closer to you when in use, and when closed provides a useful storage space underneath.
Do I really need the storage?
Only you can truthfully answer that question. We can just advise generally based on experience. A couple of questions you should ask yourself though to help make the decision are;
Do I already have ample storage in the living room? And is it all fully utilised?
Is it at risk of becoming a junk drawer that everything is quickly swept into 5 minutes before visitors come?
Only you will truthfully know the answer to those two questions.
If the answer to the question of do I really need the extra storage is no, then a simple coffee table will likely be the better option for you
Given that they have no built in storage, simple coffee tables are much less visually imposing in your living room – something that is good if you are either going for a minimalistic look, or the room is feeling a bit cramped. As they don’t have the extra storage functions built in, a standard coffee table will bring a much greater sense of light to the room as it is able to flow freely under and through the legs of the table.
