In our opinion console tables are an incredibly underrated piece of furniture, and as we shall go on to explain they are also incredibly versatile

What is a console table?

A console table is a long and relatively narrow table that is designed principally to sit against a wall.  Because it is designed to sit against a wall a console table will often come with drawers built into once side only for extra storage, along with a shelf lower down which can also prove very handy.

Console tables are typically not very deep – normally just 30-40cm due to the job they are designed to do, and also where they are intended to be placed within your home.  The standard height of a hallway table such as these is the same or slightly taller than a desk or laptop table and whilst it varies by design, a height of 80cm is fairly typical.

Where can I use a console table?

Given it’s typical dimensions, a console table has three distinct uses in the home which we will go through now

Hallway – this is the most traditional use for a console table, and why you may also see them called a hallway table on occasion.  Perfect if you have a wide long hallway for storing keys, torches and other small items in the drawers that you need to keep handy before going out.

Behind the sofa – this is where I actually have one in my home.  As well as being good in a hallway, a console table is perfect for sitting behind a sofa that is not fully pushed up against the wall and provides an excellent surface for remotes, drinks and snacks.  This role has evolved over time and the shallow depth of them means they do not take up too much space in this role, and their height is perfect too as it is approximately the same height as the back of most standard sofas.

Compact Bar – An emerging trend we have identified over recent years is the emergence of console tables being used in the dining room as a compact bar.  Again showing their versatility that their slimline design provides, they are perfect for providing a compact bar to place bottles and glasses on in a dining or living space when you don’t have the room for a full sideboard or buffet unit.

Styling a console table

We have two pro tips for you for styling a console table in your home

1.      Hang art, a mirror or photos above it – given they are almost always placed against a wall this is a perfect way of making them blend in to the setting

2.      Use a lamp or similar to bring some height to the surface – this is a simple trick to bring a bit of height to it and break up an otherwise potentially long thin flat space
