Bookcases and office shelving

With a big choice of designs to go for, what do you chose? I’m an advocate for going for a slightly taller shelf than you think you may need.  If you don’t need the space it can always be used for display purposes to help make your home office space feel more homely and welcoming.  However if you go for what you think you need and have under called it, adding extra space is a lot more challenging and expensive that simply buying a slightly taller bookcase to start with.

Traditional wood frame, or metal bookcase?  There is no arguing that the metal framed ones look nicer, however just consider if you have a lot of books to store, especially smaller ones you may be in the market for a set of bookends when they have nowhere to lean against.

Desks and workspaces

We have written extensively about choosing the right desk.  Do you need a laptop table or a traditional desk?  Straight desk or large corner desk?

The key with choosing the right desk for your home office, is understanding what you are going to be using the space for.  If you are only going to be doing occasional work on a laptop, then a laptop table is probably the right product for you.  However, if you are planning on working a lot of hours, possibly even with a dual monitor setup then it is likely a corner desk is going to be more appropriate

Desk Chairs

As with desks, understanding what you plan to do, will have a large impact on what chair is best for you, and also what budget you may need.

Operator chairs are best for casual work, with task chairs and their enhanced support and adjustment options being better if you plan to use your new office chair all day every day

If your work is going to involve more time just sitting at your desk and less time working you may wish to consider an executive chair or manager chair.  These focus more on aesthetics and typically come in more premium materials also, to help enhance the look.  The trade off with this choice being less adjustment and support options.

Office Storage

If you have a lot of files and want to keep them out of sight you should consider either a cupboard or a filing cabinet for your new home office.

Gone are the days of filing cabinets being dowdy grey metal boxes, we have lots of designs of premium filing cabinets with attractive wood finishes to consider as well as alternative colours.

Cupboards are great for storing heavier items such as lots of paperwork and are better than using your desk drawers to store it.  The main reason being, that the shelves are made from much thicker and stronger wood than the bottom of any desk drawer you will buy
