Chairs should not be chosen just on looks – each type has specific benefits and are designed for different types of use.  Let us explain;

Ergonomic Operator Chairs

These are designed for day to day use when sat at a desk working.  Unlike executive chairs they feature a more practical compact design which focuses on providing you with the appropriate support for working away at a desk.  Their ergonomic design which is designed to provide you with the right support in the right places makes them ideal for normal office and call centre environments.

If you budget allows then you should aim to go for one with a 3 lever mechanism as this allows the most adjustment to provide you with tailored support for your posture and an optimal working position for day long comfort

Task Chairs

To all intents and purposes these are very similar to operator chairs, but feature more advanced adjustment options than standard operator chairs that you would see in an everyday office.  These features often include adjustable lumbar support as well as ‘synchro-tilt’ mechanisms and the option to slide the base forward.

Executive chairs

These are the design led option for those looking for a statement piece of furniture.  Executive chairs are normally designed with private offices, boardrooms and management suites in mind.  These chairs you fill find are much larger than operator chairs and come with thick padded bases designed for sitting for extended periods.  Because of their size and design executive office chairs typically come in more premium finishes such as real leather contrasting a chrome or brushed aluminium base rather than the black plastic typically found on operator chairs.

Gaming Chairs

Gaming chairs typically come in a bucket style seat design to mimic those found in racing and performance cars.  The seat itself will usually also feature bold designs and contrasting colours or piping.

Gaming chairs are designed to provide you with continuous comfort throughout your extended gaming or streaming sessions at the computer.  Most gaming chairs will have an extended range over which they can recline compared to other computer chairs, as well as incorporating built in neck / pillow support, and on more expensive models adjustable lumber support also.

Mesh Backed Chairs

Mesh back desk chairs are typically found as an option in part of the range in both operator and executive chairs.  The great thing about them that makes them so popular is that by replacing traditional padding that you would normally find in your typical desk chairs  with a the mesh made from a stretched, flexible weave, they deliver breathability, weight distribution, and a lightweight frame that contours naturally to your back

The improved breathability of this mesh type fabric is a particularly popular element as it helps with your thermal regulation, helping heat and moisture to escape more easily reducing the risk of sweating during an 8 hour working day, especially in warmer temperatures.

Low Back vs High Back Desk Chairs

Low back chairs as their name suggests typically have a shorter back on them which ends below the shoulders.  This lower back targets it’s support on your lumbar region and makes them less ideal for long working days and should be limited to occasional short er use up to approximately 4 hours

High back operator chairs extend up to the shoulders and as a consequence will provide a greater level of support for your back which makes them better for sitting all day. Whilst they have a more bulky design, they do provide support for your whole spine reducing any potential shoulder and neck strain caused by working at them all day
