With hundreds of different designs and styles to choose from, the question is “What do I need”  Do you go for wooden chairs? Fabric? Arms? No arms? Let’s take a look at what works best for each setup

Wooden dining chairs

These are brilliant if you are looking for a country style theme to your dining room.  Ones that are solid pine or solid oak fit perfectly with a farmhouse or country cottage style chic.

Solid wood dining chairs are also traditionally incredibly durable and require very little cleaning or maintenance over their life time.  If you go for ones with contoured seating they still provide good support even without padding

If you want to go for a grander and more impressive look, then you should consider such as a Carver dining chair which comes with armrests on and is a more substantial piece of dining room furniture.  The ultimate choice would be a wingback dining chair which takes the additional poise and grandeur of a carver chair and adds upholstered panels for an even more impressive look and is ideal for long family meals and entertainment and conversation afterwards

Upholstered fabric dining chairs

Given these come with padding as well you should not be surprised to hear that they will normally be more comfortable than solid wood dining chairs.  If you have a busy family home and regular eat at the dining table then this may well be a route you want to go down.  However, if it is a family home they will require more cleaning than wooden dining chairs and overtime the fabric will degrade so they don’t have quite the same longevity.

Fabric dining chairs come with a diverse choice of materials, and you can even get ones upholstered in leather.  The frame on these chairs will typically be a choice of either metal or solid wood.  If you choose to go for ones with an aluminium frame and seat base under the padding they will be lighter and easier to move, however the ones with steel or wooden frames are by no means heavy, so don’t let that put you off

Choosing the right size dining chair

If you are not buying a table and chairs set then you will need to consider how they will fit together from a size perspective – the last thing you want is everyone feeling cramped and squashed in around the dinner table on what is meant to be a social occasion.

Once you have the measurement for your dining table the first thing to consider is the height of the chairs that you are looking at.  To be sat comfortably you want to be allowing approx. 25-30cm between the seat and the bottom of the table so you can easily get your legs in and out

You also need to allow around 15-20cm between each of your dining chairs, any less than this and you will have diners bumping their elbows around the dining table and feeling squashed in

Lastly, if you are looking to go for chairs with arms, you want to make sure the top of the arms sit 2-3cm below the bottom of the table surface.  This will allow people to pull their chairs up to the table easily and sit close enough to be able to east without having to lean forward constantly.
