When it comes to choosing a TV stand or TV Cabinet you have a lot of choice available on the market, and here at Price Crash Furniture we have hundreds of designs for you to choose from.  But what should you be looking for? And what do the various names mean? 

What is a TV Stand?

As the name suggests it is an item of TV furniture – but what is the difference between this and a TV cabinet of media unit?  It doesn’t help that the names are often used interchangeably.

A TV stand is the most simple choice of furniture for your TV – typically found in a living room or reception area it is a basic design just consisting of shelves and supports at either end

What is a TV Cabinet?

A TV Cabinet is a more evolved design of the TV stand that will include a number of drawers and shelves in it’s styling.  Typically these will be in a wood finish or a combination of one or two colours.  A solid wood TV Cabinet can help to add a real touch of class.

What is a Media Unit?

This is the most evolved of the three options – a media unit will typically be a large cabinet with multiple drawers and cupboards built in designed specifically for the family home that has many consoles and devices, and needs plenty of concealed storage to avoid a cluttered look.

Choosing the correct size TV Cabinet

A lot of the advice we give on this topic for buying furniture also applies to choosing your next item of TV Furniture.  It is important to understand the size of it in relation to the rest of your room, will it be too big and intrusive?  Will you have sufficient space left?

The best way to judge this we have found it is work out the dimensions of the unit you like and then mark it out on the floor using masking tape or similar.   This will help you to visualise it in the proposed space.

The other factor to consider is the size of your TV – as they have got lighter over the years this has become more important as they can now easily be knocked accidentally.  As such, you should avoid having any overhand of your television past the edges of your new unit.  Along with helping the visual balance it also protects a key part of family life.

What colour should I choose?

A lot will depend on the colour of your room.  You should avoid choosing an exact match for the walls so that the furniture does not blend it, this will help your chosen item of TV furniture become more of a statement piece in the room. 

If you have a small space you should avoid choosing dark colours.  Options such as white, grey or light oak will help reflect light and make the room feel less cramped.  A high gloss TV cabinet is a perfect choice for you in this scenario and is also what I have in my living room.

Should you be fortunate enough to have a big space and you are looking for a true statement piece of TV furniture to stand out in the room, then darker colours will provide a contrast and really help.  Asides from the traditional choices of darker woods such as mahogany or a black finish we are seeing sage green grow as a popular option that helps provide a splash of colour and accent to the room to help avoid a more clinical look.

Consider the height of your new TV stand

This is not something we see people doing too often, but is also worthy of note.  The TV cabinet you choose should leave your TV at a comfortable eyeline from your seating.  If you have quite high chairs in your room as people do when they need to be able to get in and out of them more easily then you should consider a tall TV stand to help maintain a more comfortable and practical viewing position
