Toronto 160cm Dining Table - Price Crash Furniture

Collection: Dining Tables

Here at Price Crash Furniture we have hundreds of dining tables to choose from, so you are somewhat spoilt for choice.  What is the right dining table for you?  What should you consider when buying a dining room table?  Let us walk you through the key points from our 15 years experience in the furniture industry.

Choosing the right shape of dining room table

Shape has to play a key part in the decision making process – the choice of shape is impacted by where you want to place it, and how much room you have.

If you have a long or thin room, then the best choice for your space is going to be a rectangular dining table.  These will help seat for dinner the most people you can with ease.

A round dining table is best for small settings and small spaces – they are a great way of encouraging conversation as everyone is facing each other.  Pro-tip – if your round dining table is too big however this can have the opposite effect as everyone feels a long distance away.  A round dining table is ideal for a maximum of 4 or 5 people in our experience.

Square options are also great for small spaces and has the same benefit for encouraging conversation as a round dining table.  These are popular and a great choice if you are going for a rustic or farmhouse look.

An oval dining table will give you the best of both worlds combing the soft edges of a round dining table that reduce the space required with the extra capacity that you get with a rectangular one, giving you a hybrid option that helps boost overall seating capacity whilst still working with the available space

If you only have an occasional requirement to seat more than 4 for dinner you should also consider an extendable dining table.  These will give you the benefit of the extra capacity when needed, without it permanently taking up extra space as they can be folded down and reduced in size when not needed.  The flexibility you get with an extendable dining table or a drop leaf table makes them perfect for the occasional family gathering or dinner party.

Choosing the right size dining table

As with any item of furniture, you need to consider size and space when looking at the size of your new dining table.

Room to move – you should aim to allow at least 90cm around between all sides of the table and any walls, this is to allow sufficient room for people to be able to slide their chair back and get out easily.

Elbow room – there is nothing worse than being sat too close to someone at dinner and you end up bumping elbows with each other as you try to eat, we’ve all been to functions over time when too many guests have been squeezed in at a table.  As such, you should aim to allow at least 60cm per person along the side of the dining table to provide suitable elbow room and comfort whilst eating – if you can allow 75cm then that is better still, but 60cm will suffice.

What is the best material for your dining table?

There is no definitive answer to this as it is down to personal taste, however there are key things that you should know & remember for every option

Solid wood dining tables – there are in our opinion some of the best looking, and they help bring a sense of warmth and character to a dining space.  However, depending on the wood used they can be both very heavy, and also some of the more expensive choices.

Glass tops – available as a choice of black white or clear.  These are great for anyone wanting to create a modern look for their space. However, they can feel cold to touch, and require more cleaning than other options, especially black and clear options as they are very prone to showing up fingerprints.

Wood veneer – in our experience this is a great compromise.  Going for this option for your dining table means you can get stunning looks without the price tag of the more premium options.  Also, because of the way it is manufactured these will often be much lighter and easier to move than a solid wood choice.
